Another Motorbike Tragedy

Waikato Serious Crash Unit reported that the boy (Blake Fowlie) had been riding a 100cc trail bike on a stretch of Rotokohu Road which had a 100km/h speed limit. He was hit by the 4WD while turning into his family’s property.

He was rushed to Waikato Hospital with severe internal injuries, multiple fractures and abrasions. Heavy traffic from a nearby motorcycle street race competition meant ambulances struggled to reach the boy quickly.

He was airlifted to Auckland’s Starship hospital where he died yesterday morning.

AIL of New Zealand attended the recent Tauranga Airshow and provided Free Childsafe Kits to parents, grandparents and care-givers. We also were able to give away two child-sized scooters. The winners were Tracy Momsen of Papamoa and Hayley Mansell of Mt Maunganui. Congratulations!!

Ban on children riding quad bikes rejected

The Government, Federated Farmers and the Children’s Commissioner have rejected the idea of banning children from riding quad bikes, despite the death of a six-year-old girl at the weekend.

Emergency services were called to the Thundercross Valley Bike Park, 20km west of Huntly, about 3pm on Saturday after Amber Taylor Vincent was killed.

It is understood she was with her father at the park and was wearing a helmet while riding the bike.

Two cabinet ministers have dismissed calls for quad bike law reforms after the accident.

Unacceptable Rise in Workplace Deaths

Thirty-one families will be without a husband, father, brother or son this Christmas because of workplace deaths.

Twice as many men died at work between July and November when compared to the same period in 2007.

The Minister of Labour Kate Wilkinson has ordered a report into the 31 fatal workplace accidents. Fifteen people died in the same months during 2007 and and 18 died in 2008.

The death-toll rose to 31 this year when a 38 year-old pulp mill worker died in Kawerau last Wednesday…
